This course addresses historical and contemporary issues in gender and sexuality studies. Topics and approaches are drawn from anthropology, cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, history, literature, performance studies, sociology, and visual studies. The specific focus of this version of the course centers on popular music. It will use examples mainly from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Turkey and a variety of musical genres (from blues and rock to disco and rap). We will approach issues related to gender and sexuality in popular music from a cultural studies framework with particular attention to topics like hegemony, performativity, power, and social construction.
