This course introduces students to artistic approaches across the historical phases of modern art, roughly from the 1850s to the 1950s. The primary purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive perspective on 20th-century visual arts by exploring the influences of politics, science, culture, and technology. The course not only emphasizes visual artworks from specific regions but also adopts a multi-centered approach, including modern reflections from Türkiye.

Each lecture will focus on visual artworks that coalesce around key concepts, movements, and styles, highlighting important historical and social aspects of modernity. These works will be discussed comprehensively along with comparative material. By expanding their knowledge, students are expected to develop a critical understanding of modern art, including the intentions and pursuits of modern artists. Ultimately, this course aims to enhance students’ ability to analyze artworks from multiple perspectives and develop insightful interpretations.
